In lieu of issuing letter grades for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years, HEA 1591 requires IDOE to develop a school performance report for public and state accredited non-public schools to post on their websites by October 15, 2023. IDOE is also required to provide the General Assembly with future accountability recommendations by December 1, 2024.
In response to this legislation, IDOE has developed individual school performance reports, with the required statutory indicators, for each public and state accredited non-public school.
St. Thomas More School's summary can be found here: STMS Link
St. Thomas More follows a course of academic instruction prescribed by the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Gary. Methods of instruction include individual focus, small groups and total class involvement, at the teacher’s discretion, based on subject matter. In this way we can employ the most effective methods – as needed – for the intellectual, emotional and social advancement of all our students.
As much as possible, we strive for each St. Thomas More student to work at his or her level of ability. To promote positive self-image, we encourage children to compete only with themselves in their class work, as well as other areas.
In addition to the study of our Catholic faith, St. Thomas More's core curriculum includes: art, computer education, language arts, mathematics, music, physical education, reading, SELF, science, social studies, and spanish.
Parent-Teacher Communications and Conferences
We encourage open, direct communication between parents and teachers. Student-Led conferences are held in October after the first grading period. Dates will be posted on the website and in the school newsletter.
At any time, however, parents and teachers are welcome to arrange a conference to discuss a student’s progress or any other matter that may arise. To schedule a confidential meeting, simply email your child's teacher. We encourage questions and concerns be discussed with the teacher prior to scheduling a meeting with the Principal.
Testing, Report Cards and Interim Reports
Examinations include teacher-developed tests, quizzes from school textbooks, readiness tests and standardized tests (including high school placement tests for 8th grade students). NWEA standardized testing – given 3 times a year – is provided to students in Kindergarten through 8th grades. Results are shared with parents with their quarterly report cards. ILEARN is the examination taken by our students in Grades 3-8. It is issued by the State of Indiana. The ILEARN exam determines the student mastering of the required Indiana State Standards. These tests are given typically between mid-April through mid-May. They also help determind placement in 7 & 8 Honors classes.
Our grade scale is defined by the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Gary. National Junior Honor Society status may be achieved only in grades seven and eight. The A-B-C system is used for grades 1 through 8. Pre-School, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten uses a separate alpha-abbreviated system: Exceeds expectations, Meets expectations, and Needs Improvement.
Progress reports are issued electronically midway through a grading period. Report cards are issued quarterly.
Student Support Services
The Student Special Services team provides remedial help to students in Grades K-8. Tutoring is provided on an individual or small group basis in a pull out or inclusion setting. Tutoring help is based on test scores or teacher recommendation. Any questions contact Director of Student Services, Mrs. Cindy Block, [email protected]
